Bank connects the poor

By means of a partnership with cellphone network provider MTN, FNB says it is able to reach even the poorest communities through the provision of a R5 prepaid airtime recharge voucher, recently introduced as part of the mobile company's Umoya airtime category.

FNB is said to be the first of the big four banks to launch a real-time cellphone top up for as little as R5. Previously, the minimum prepaid airtime voucher top up for MTN was R25 but customers can now recharge from as little as R5, using the bank's Online Banking, their ATMs and their Cellphone Banking system.

As with other prepaid purchases on the bank's Online Banking, ATMs and Cellphone Banking, the purchase of the R5 prepaid airtime recharge voucher will be free of bank charges. In addition, Cellphone Banking offers a zero-rated dial string which will be free of network charges. By dialling *130*321#, the mobile company's customers can purchase the R5 prepaid airtime recharge voucher for themselves or someone else without paying any network or bank charges.
