Managing knowledge vital for public service

Best practices in knowledge management in the public service, will be the main focus of the Knowledge Learning Management Network (KLMN) in Bloemfontein next week.

The Department of Public and Service and Administration (DPSA) is organising the Indaba on Public Service, scheduled to take place on 14 and 15 February.

The first one and half-day session will be hosted by the Free State provincial administration in collaboration with the DPSA.

Government officials will discuss topics including defining knowledge management in the public service and strategies to implement such management.

Various provinces, national departments, parastatals, and academic institutions have experimented with various ways to implement these management principles, says the DPSA.

These experiments are worth sharing in the knowledge management community, and will be showcased to counterparts at the Indaba.

Critical to the upcoming session is the official launch of a vibrant knowledge management community that will be instrumental in stressing these practices in government.

Presentations will also be drawn from the academic and private sectors.

The Knowledge Management Learning Network was launched in 2003 with the ultimate goal of entrenching a culture of this management in government, with aims to put mechanisms and systems in place to drive this system.

The purpose of the network is to provide a platform for those in service delivery to explore and reach an understanding on the importance of knowledge management in the business of government.

Keeping public servants abreast of global developments in this field is another objective for the programme.
