New partnership to boost SAA bag handling

South African Airways' (SAA) aims to improve baggage handling services to its customers through its new partnership with Swissport International.

From 1 February, Swissport will handle SAA's airport ramp handling requirements in South Africa, the national carrier said.

"We are delighted that Swissport has agreed to handle SAA. Between the Airports Company South Africa [Acsa], Swissport and SAA, we will work hard to remedy some of the baggage-related difficulties which have affected our customers," said Chris Smyth, SAA's General Manager Operations.

"Ultimately, we are confident that Swissport will succeed in providing a reliable and efficient service to our passengers.”

The agreement will take effect from 1 February 2008.

The international cargo and airport ground handling company Swissport will focus on services for SAA at O.R Tambo, Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and East London International Airports.

"We are very pleased that SAA has displayed confidence in Swissport's ability to provide a world class service,” said Willy Hallauer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Swissport South Africa.

“We are looking forward to this agreement leading to a mutually beneficial, lasting relationship with SAA."

ACSA invested over than R1.3 billion in infrastructure for the nation's major and smaller airports, in preparation for the influx of visitors expected for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.

The project, includes upgrades to terminals, access and parking, and is on schedule for completion by the end of 2009.
