Long before emails, instant messages and social media made communication almost instantaneous, there was the humble red post-box. Now, the South African Post Office is celebrating the familiar fixture with a new stamp issue, World Post Day: Love the Post-box, paying tribute to an enduring symbol of handwritten letters, postcards and physical connection.
A nostalgic icon gets a new stamp issue
The new issue was launched at the National Stamp Show, hosted by the Philatelic Federation of South Africa at the Country Club Johannesburg in Woodmead.
The issue takes a nostalgic look at the red post-box and its place in South Africa’s postal history, while reflecting on the enduring appeal of sending something tangible to another person.
Speaking at the launch, SAPO acting CEO Fathima Gany said the stamps celebrate the human connection behind traditional forms of communication.
“The Love the Post-Box stamp issue is playful and nostalgic, but it also carries a meaningful message about human connection,” she said.
Gany added that handwritten letters and physical keepsakes continue to offer something different in an age of instant digital communication, while noting that the Post Office will continue to evolve alongside changing technology.
Bringing the post-box to life
The artwork featured on the stamps was illustrated by Rachel-Mari Ackermann, formerly of SAPO’s Philatelic Services, and adapted for printing in South Africa by Thea Clemons, senior graphic designer at the Post Office.
Clemons also designed the new SA Post Office Trophy, which will be awarded to the best South African exhibit at the National Stamp Show.
The trophy will be presented at the Palmares, a black-tie event for philatelic enthusiasts taking place at the Country Club following the close of the show.
Two pieces of postal history
The stamp issue also highlights two distinctive types of post-box that have formed part of South Africa’s postal landscape.
One stamp features the oldest pillar post-box still in use in South Africa, located in Makhanda in the Eastern Cape. Dating back to the late 1850s, it is widely regarded as the oldest surviving example still in use in the country.
Another focuses on the lamp post box, a smaller type traditionally attached to existing street infrastructure such as lamp posts and poles. These boxes helped bring posting facilities closer to communities and made postal services more accessible.
Together, the two designs offer a glimpse into the different ways South Africa’s postal network has evolved over time.
More than just a stamp
The issue comprises a self-adhesive booklet containing 10 Standard Postage stamps, together with a Commemorative Display Card (CDC).

With its Love the Post-box issue, the Post Office is celebrating an object that has become part of the visual landscape of South African streets, and a reminder of a time when staying connected meant putting pen to paper and sending a message on its way.
