Massmart’s e-waste programme diverts more than 1,800 tonnes from landfill

South African retailer Massmart has collected more than 1,800 tonnes of electronic waste since launching its retailer-led recycling programme in 2008, as it expands its focus on circular economy practices and responsible disposal.

The programme, managed in collaboration with the e-Waste Recycling Authority (ERA) and Desco Electronic Recyclers, allows consumers to drop off unwanted electronic products at dedicated collection points at Makro stores for responsible recycling.

The initiative provides a retail-based route for consumers to dispose of electronic waste, including appliances and smaller electronic items, rather than sending them to landfill, where hazardous materials can pose environmental and public health risks.

The milestone coincides with International e-Waste Day on 14 October, which highlights the growing challenge of managing discarded electrical and electronic equipment.

Retail infrastructure supports responsible disposal

A distinguishing feature of Massmart’s programme is its use of custom-built 20-foot containers at collection points. These are designed to accommodate larger household appliances, including double-door refrigerators and chest freezers, alongside smaller electronic products.

The infrastructure broadens the range of items consumers can dispose of through the programme, addressing a practical barrier to recycling bulky appliances.

Viratha Hariram, senior manager of sustainability and regeneration at Massmart, said the initiative formed part of the retailer’s broader ambition to become a regenerative business by making responsible consumer choices more accessible.

“Our aim to be a regenerative business extends beyond our own operations and includes creating practical solutions that make it easier for consumers to make responsible choices,” Hariram said.

“We are grateful for the way that customers continue to embrace this programme and we are proud to have now collected over 1,800 tons of e-waste since its inception.”

Circular economy depends on consumer participation

Electronic waste is one of the world’s fastest-growing waste streams, increasing the need for accessible collection systems and responsible recycling processes.

For retailers, initiatives such as Massmart’s programme create an opportunity to extend sustainability efforts beyond stores and supply chains by involving customers in the responsible management of products at the end of their useful lives.

Massmart is encouraging consumers to gather unwanted electronics from their homes and use available collection facilities to ensure these products enter appropriate recycling channels.

“Every mobile phone, appliance, cable or electronic device that is recycled rather than discarded helps reduce environmental impact and supports a more sustainable future for South Africa,” Hariram said.

The programme highlights the role retail networks can play in connecting consumers with recycling infrastructure, while supporting wider efforts to reduce waste and recover materials from discarded electronics.
