Carrol Boyes is returning to leather handbags with a new collection that reinterprets the brand’s sculptural design heritage for contemporary consumers, blending archival motifs with modern silhouettes and functional detailing.

Launched on 16 October 2026, the collection marks a new chapter for the South African design brand, revisiting ideas first explored by founder Carrol Boyes in the early 2000s.
The range has been developed by her niece, Caro Boyes, the brand’s creative director, who draws on the archive while introducing a contemporary perspective.
The collection builds on Carrol Boyes’ original idea that functional art should extend beyond the home. Early handbags, wallets and purses translated the brand’s distinctive sculptural aesthetic into wearable accessories, characterised by pewter hardware, grey leather designed to develop character over time and woven interpretations.

The latest range returns to leather, using the material’s combination of suppleness and structure to balance everyday practicality with the brand’s signature artistic details.
“I wanted to take our sculptural design language beyond the home, creating art you can carry,” says Caro Boyes. “From the sculptural shapes to the distinctive hardware, each piece balances art and function while carrying the Carrol Boyes legacy forward in a new way.”
Three heritage motifs shape the collection
The collection centres on three motifs from the brand’s archive: Diver, Toe Touch and Cradle. Each draws on an earlier design or sculpture, reinterpreted through contemporary handbag styles.
Diver, originally used as a zip pull and handle detail on early leather pieces, becomes a focal point across two Flap Bags and a Phone Pouch. The sculptural figure introduces movement and character through a design that connects the brand’s earlier work with its current collection.
Toe Touch originates from one of Carrol Boyes’ early prototype sculptures. Its poised, forward-stretching figure features on the Chain Purse, bringing the motif’s associations with balance and flexibility into a compact everyday accessory.
Cradle, which appeared on one of the brand’s leather pieces in 2004, returns across two studded Phone Pouches and the Studded Slouch Bag. The abstract, embracing figure introduces a softer sculptural expression to the collection’s statement piece.
Balancing design heritage with everyday functionality
Material and usability are central to the new range, with leather selected to support each bag’s shape while remaining suitable for everyday use. Sculptural metallic details provide continuity with the brand’s established design language.
Rather than reproducing archival pieces, Caro Boyes has adapted their defining elements for contemporary silhouettes and different uses, allowing the collection to appeal to consumers discovering the brand’s design heritage for the first time.

The launch also reflects the personal dimension of the brand’s evolution, with Caro building on her aunt’s work while establishing her own interpretation of its visual language.
Handbags occupy a practical and personal place in consumers’ everyday lives, moving between work, leisure and social occasions. The collection applies the brand’s functional-art philosophy to accessories designed to be used as well as admired.
The new leather handbag collection will be available online and at Carrol Boyes stores across South Africa, with the range also available exclusively online through the Carrol Boyes UK store.
