Retail South Africa

Marching on!

We're almost out of the month of love and so the year marches on. But if you feel you're trailing behind the head of the pack, here are a few things to mull over...

Michelle Francis suggests a new currency for FMCG retail - shopper delight; Liza Bright gives us a few things to consider when facing FMCG challenges; and Rolf Ackermann begs for packaging that opens (and three-point plugs).

In business news, SAB is making a massive investment in a new maltings plant; JD Group's CEO has resigned, Absa will soon have a new name, Spark ATM Systems makes an acquisition, and Growthpoint has upped its offer for Fountainhead.

Onward, ho!

Shan Radcliffe, Group Head - Retail

New currency for FMCG retail: shopper delight
[Michelle Francis] There is no denying that when it comes to the launch of new products or variants, product sampling is one of the most effective vehicles and is one of the main drivers included in the mix. The other is when brands are looking for a cost-effective quick solution to move product off the shelves. Both avenues have their merit but it is going to become increasingly difficult to maintain/increase retailer mindshare and support if we do not raise the bar and deliver medium to long-term value.
