Going green

More than 15000 people gathered at Durban's International Convention Centre today for the opening of COP17, the United Nation's annual climate change conference, which President Jacob Zuma has called a "defining moment". The conference will run until 9 December, with the CMP7 to the Kyoto Protocol taking place in conjunction with the international event.

While government looks at combating carbon emissions, small organic farming operations are getting all tied up in red tape.

Back on the shop floor, Chris Moerdyk tells us how to exceed expectations when dealing with difficult customers, and Gareth Pearson looks at how out-of-stock losses are costing retailers billions.

Be green!

Difficult customer? Exceed expectation!
[Chris Moerdyk: @chrismoerdyk] There are a lot of cute little phrases in marketing - most of which make those of us who have been in the business for a while want to go outside and throw up in the gladioli. The Party Animal Revolution
[Ruth Cooper] "Four legs good, two legs bad!" chants a man in a wrestler's mask with a speaker phone in hand. In the other hand is a chain attached to an evil-looking pig standing on his hind legs in a snappy suit; some call him Mr Pig, some call him Deadpi9. A busk of Mr Pig stares at us from his vantage point at the top centre of the stage, his head nestled amongst barbed wire, his red eyes glowing malevolently, hypnotising his audience, his followers. This is Deadpi9 vs the rest. This is Animal Farm. This is Balkanology. Read more >>

Spring-cleaning life in Everything Must Go
[Eugene Yiga] Nick Halsey (Will Ferrell) isn't having a good day. After 16 years of valuable work as a salesman, he's unexpectedly fired. Well, I suppose it was bound to happen given his increasing habit of drinking on the job. The same goes for his marriage. When he gets home (with two six packs of beer), all his things are on the front lawn. His wife has left and she's changed all the locks. Oh, and she's frozen the accounts so he can't get any cash. And you thought you had it rough! Read more >>

Second chance at life in Beginners
[Eugene Yiga] Oliver (Ewan McGregor) is a strange guy. He's a 38-year old Los Angeles artist who designs CD covers for rock bands. But instead of doing the simple work they want, he prefers coming up with depressingly quirky cartoons like "The History of Sadness". His cynicism for life, and inability to form relationships that last, probably comes from his parents and the empty marriage they had for 44 years before his mother died. Read more >>
