Manyi and a centralised government ad budget Once again, the media is up in arms: government spokesman Jimmy Manyi last week revealed Cabinet's plans to centralise the R1 billion government ad budget under the GCIS, which he also heads up - and that media which "assist government in getting its message across" and which "told the truth about service delivery" will be favoured. SANEF's prompt response? That this "incredible plan... means the government wishes to bribe newspapers to become its propagandists or even its mouthpieces by publishing only the government's view of news and affairs." According to SANEF, this would be a serious offence against the freedom of the media clause in the Constitution, which the government has sworn to uphold. "Freedom means liberty and particularly conduct where financial inducement or threat plays no part." Combined with the latest concerning the Protection of Information Bill, not surprisingly, Zapiro has come up with two controversial cartoons: Pressure on Lady Freedom to fight back as ANC push forward with "Secrecy" Bill" and New communications policy from Jimmy Manyi. In other news, the launch of iMaverick, South Africa (and Africa's) first daily iPad newspaper, will be in August 2011 and there's an initial exclusive offer of an iPad 2 bundled with subscriptions; a print ad by Lowe Bull blew up dramatically in Shoe City's face(book wall); and the Mail & Guardian has released its 2011 list of 200 Young South Africans (you have to take out to lunch). It's also been a year since the 2010 FIFA World Cup and almost everyone has been playing the reminiscing game. Missing Phillip... Special focus on media freedom
In a statement issued late last night (Thursday, 9 June 2011), SANEF has condemned "a Cabinet plan announced by government spokesman Jimmy Manyi at a briefing on June 9 that government allocation of its R1 billion a year advertising budget will favour newspapers which 'assist government in getting its message across' and which 'told the truth about service delivery'." [Issa Sikiti da Silva] Post-apartheid South Africa has entered one of the most boiling periods of its history, as journalists, businesses, politicians, non-governmental organisations, trade unionists, academics and ordinary citizens have formed a 'one love, one heart' bloc to stop the Protection of Information Bill - aka Secrecy Bill - from being enacted in its current form. But, will the ruling ANC hear the cry of its children? Read more >>
[Gareth Ackerman] It is in business' interest to express itself very much more vociferously in opposition to the Protection of Information Bill, which is presently being pushed through parliament with a haste and zeal that suggest the government is determined to retreat into a self-protective environment of secrecy and concealment. This is terribly concerning and, given the wide range of concerns from a very broad range of South Africans, very difficult to understand. Read more >>

[Issa Sikiti da Silva] In a world where the source of information is media, content is king but, in today's world, where the media is a site of coordination, there are social objects and stuff to share - things to talk about, Walter Pike, of pike.co.za, said yesterday, Monday, 6 June 2011, at the Integrated Marketing Communication Conference ( IMCC) in Sandton, Johannesburg. [Mandy de Waal: @mandyldewaal] Media people shook their heads in disbelief when government spokesman Jimmy Manyi laid out his rules for media outlets to receive slices of government's advertising cake. [Lindsay Grubb] It's much easier to lose a customer than it is to make them a loyal fan, so why are companies such as Shoe City shooting themselves in the proverbial foot? Here's how it - and You magazine - lost my business in three easy steps. [ update: Shoe City apology] Read more >>
Shoe City marketing director Louise Hamman today, Wednesday, 8 June 2011, has issued a statement apologising on behalf of the company after receiving complaints yesterday, Tuesday 7 June, via marketing and social media sites about an "offensive" print ad by Lowe Bull for Shoe City, which was labeled as "tasteless", "irresponsible" and "insensitive" by animal lovers. [updated] Read more >>
In a statement late afternoon on Wednesday, 8 June 2011, Lowe Bull CEO Wayne Naidoo regretted any distress caused by the Shoe City ad, saying it was never the agency's aim to encourage cruelty towards animals. "The 'cat' ad was never intended to cause offence at any point," he said. "However, we acknowledge that it is possible to interpret the ad in such a way that it looks to be in poor taste. For this we apologise. No harm was meant." Read more >>
In a statement released on Wednesday afternoon, 8 June 2011, You magazine editor Linda Pietersen has said that, as editor, she is just as upset as readers about the Shoe City advertisement in the issue of 26 May. [Walter Pike] Nando's is a master at opportunistic advertising, frequently managing to take advantage of the buzz in the market and turning the conversation to be about itself. The late 2010 campaign poking fun at Cell C was excellent, as was Cell C's way of dealing with it, and it had the opportunity to kick on from here with a proper new marketing campaign - but it has blown it.
