Beyond belief

What a crazy few years it has been lately, with all these manmade and natural disasters. And just how much has technology changed media coverage of these events?!

It was a chilling (and literally hair-raising) experience for me watching Al-Jazeera's live streaming of the earthquakes and resulting tsunamis in Japan on Friday, 11 March 2011 - on my laptop. And then later watching YouTube on my TV, thanks to the Wi-Fi enabled Blu-Ray player, plus all the tweets and photographs in newspapers and online media sites.

We at Bizcommunity.com send our thoughts and prayers to that brave, stoic nation and thank all those professional and citizen journalists for keeping the world up-to-date with everything. Respect.

We've provided links at the bottom of Chris Moerdyk's column today to Rescue South Africa, which is looking for further donations for its mission to Japan to join other international relief efforts.

Sterkte

Special focus on media freedom

What to do with critical media: to regulate or not to regulate?
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] As governments across the African continent come under increasing pressure from critical media, 'vulture' ruling parties believe the only way to deal with this 'surrogate opposition' is to regulate it through statutory mechanisms that will eventually dent its wayward reporting. But some African voices of reason, such as Zambia's Fred M'membe, argue that the restriction of good media never produces good media. Read more >>

We need accurate reporting, not distortion - ANC
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] We are not interested in closing down publications, in muzzling the media or in embedded journalism; what we need is accurate reporting, and not distortion, ANC Gauteng head of communications Nkenke Kekana said yesterday, Thursday, 10 March 2011, speaking at the two-day Regulations and Rights media conference at Wits University in Johannesburg. African media is surrogate opposition - Prof Tawana Kupe
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Due to the lack of a strong and united political opposition, the media in Africa, at least those that are critical of government policies, becomes a powerful force called a surrogate opposition, Prof Tawana Kupe, dean of faculty of humanities at Wits University, said this week in Johannesburg. Media freedom, self-regulation: the Ghanaian experience
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Until 1992, journalists and editors in Ghana, and the independent media in general, have suffered a lot at the hands of undemocratic regimes, which cracked down on critical reporting and imposed strict restrictions limiting media freedom. As a new, liberal constitution was being written in 1992, media activists came out guns blazing, demanding that media suffering end and reporting become free. [view twitterfall] Read more >>

African media and the self-regulation dilemma
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] As the independent media in Africa is engaged in a fierce battle against repressive and not-so-democratic governments keen to sweep their corrupt wrongdoings under the carpet, the issue of self-regulation has become almost like a daily bread in many parts of the continent. Right of access to information hampered by govts - media conference
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] The right of access to information is being hampered in many parts of the world, especially in Africa, by government officials wary of journalists' desire to 'embarrass' them, and the state's 'insincere' reason of hiding behind the issue of national security. This emerged today, Wednesday, 9 March 2011, at the Regulations and Rights media conference at Wits University in Johannesburg. [view twitterfall] Read more >>

Regulations, rights media conference kicks off at Wits
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] The press is powerful, and as judges we are aware of the power of the press, and when you are in a position of power, self-reflection is very important, former Constitutional Court judge Kate O'Regan said today, Wednesday, 9 March 2011, at the Regulations and Rights media conference currently taking place at Wits University in Johannesburg. It's the Big Meanies versus the Agents of the Revolutionary House
[Gill Moodie: @grubstreetSA] Maybe I'm too paraat but I do feel we need to guard against getting too touchy feely about what might be wrong with South Africa's press ombudsman, which has been under attack from the ANC as the party appears to be striving to replace the press's self-regulation system with statutory oversight in the form of the proposed media appeals tribunal. Lifesaving technology dilutes disasters
[Chris Moerdyk: @chrismoerdyk] There is no question that modern technology saved hundreds of thousands of lives during Japan's devastating earthquake and tsunami on Friday, 11 March 2011. Putting passion into publishing
[Chris Moerdyk: @chrismoerdyk] About 29 years ago, in a tiny little town in backwoods South Africa, a five-year old kid got hold of an exercise book and started pasting in cut-out pictures of cars he had gleaned from throwaway magazines. Today, all these years later, he's still doing it. Except now he's not filling up old exercise books but rather something a lot more glossy.
