I LIKE SA design

So, the excitement of Design Indaba is over once again and we trust that you enjoyed our Design Indaba special edition newsletter last week. Speaking of which, as a proud supporter of the South African design community, we have just launched a new biz design showcase on our portal, where you can show off your best portfolio pieces to the world across 12 different design categories.

The next exciting event is South by South West (SxSW), the annual film, music and interactive technology festival in Austin, Texas. As Ivo Vegter writes, "A number of the South Africans travelling to SxSW do so with financial support from Old Mutual, whose head of digital, Jack Kruger, has a keen interest in the power of the social web to spur entrepreneurialism and innovation. The ability for South Africans to join a conversation with the minds and madmen on the bleeding edge is an opportunity he'd like to see spread as widely as possible - whether or not you jet off to the beating heart of innovation in America, or follow along as a virtual presence."

Keep an eye out for South African coverage of SxSW on Bizcommunity and on Twitter through our twitterfall, as well as through the sxswsa blog and Twitter account, @sxswsa!

The (poorly attended) Press Council public hearings came to an end last week and you may catch up on what was discussed here. This week, in a bid to enrich the debate on media rights and regulation, and to encourage a broader African continental perspective, SANEF and the Wits Journalism Department are holding a two-day conference entitled "Regulations and rights" on the roles and responsibilities of Africa's media. The event is supported by the British and Canadian High Commissions.

Up here in Joburg, all eyes are on the iconic Ponte City tower as Vodacom's taken down its hoarding in preparation for a new one reflecting its new corporate logo and branding. Will it be going Vodafone-orange-red, bringing us back to the heyday of the Coca-Cola signage?

Have a great week!
Simone Puterman (@SimoneBiz)
Managing editor

PS Sadly, South Africa's oldest social network SAReunited.com is no more, thanks to Facebook.

Please send all South African marketing and media news to marketingnews@bizcommunity.com, international news to internationalnews@bizcommunity.com and opinion pieces to contributors-marketing@bizcommunity.com. Responses to this column welcomed in our online editor's column archive.

SABC News "unprofessional", "reckless" and "duplicitous" - BCCSA
[Herman Manson: @marklives] SABC News has been shown to have sunk to a new low. The BCCSA has found that the SABC was "unprofessional and actually reckless", as well as "duplicitous" and deceptive, in its broadcast of allegations by controversial businessman Robert Gumede that investigative journalist Sam Sole was 'bribed' with a R900 air ticket by John Sterenborg, a former business partner of Gumede, to investigate him. Profit, prosperity: sequel to Nash's 2011 marketing trends trilogy
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Marketers need to understand the value equation because value, as one of the most critical components of profit, is still 'the new black' in an environment where the return to profit is bigger in agenda and where everyone feels the pressure. So said Yellowwood CEO Kay Nash as her company this week released the 2011 marketing trends trilogy. Read more >>

We live in uncertain times, find an anti-dote to survive, marketers told
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] As the principles of democracy and free market economy - which the world relied on for several decades to build and maintain its prosperity - continue to fade away, giving way to food insecurity, financial crisis and energy problems, among others, the world is now living in the age of anxiety. This emerged at the Yellowwood 'a hundred years in a decade' presentation held yesterday, Wednesday, 2 March 2011, at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. Read more >>

Advertising blunders we never see... or shouldn't
[Alan Engelsman] In the early 1980s - yes, before the birth of cellphones and the Internet - my creative colleagues and I at Ogilvy Direct once had an internal competition to see who could find the biggest advertising blunder of all time. It was tough. In those days advertising errors - really major blunders - were hard to come by. Read more >>

The digital space in 2011 and beyond
[Mark Buwalda] At the end of the last century, did we fully anticipate how the digital space would have changed just 10 years down the line? I doubt it. The expected growth of the digital space in volume-sales was surpassed in record time and, by 2010, we welcomed the two-billionth cyberspace resident to the online world. In the South African context, SAARF AMPS shows a continuous rise on Internet connectivity. Read more >>

Maternity leave for freelancers?
[Georgina Guedes] One of the benefits for freelancing mothers or those with their own businesses is the greater likelihood of flexibility to spend time with your children. The downside of this is that there is no such thing as paid maternity leave in a "no-work, no-earn" model. So if you're pregnant or considering having a baby on your freelance income, here's how to try and make it work for you. Read more >>

Oscar night! But brace yourself; they let them speak
[Douglas Kruger] Who are the worst speakers on the planet? No, politicians come in a close second. The answer, curiously, is: the best actors on the planet. That's right, Oscar night has rolled around again, and although there is no denying their consummate mastery of the thespian's craft - the emotional complexity required for Inception, the simple yet elegant storytelling of The King's Speech - their public speaking skills leave, well... public speaking skills to be desired. MMA condemns Kuli Roberts article
The Kuli Roberts column, published on Sunday, 27 February 2011, in the Sunday World has sparked much debate across South Africa. Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) has condemned the newspaper for "demeaning 'coloured women' and displaying sexism". Read more >>

The Kuli Roberts column - why the ANC want a media tribunal
[Chris Moerdyk: @chrismoerdyk] So, Sunday World columnist Kuli Roberts has apologised for writing a "racist" column about coloured people and typical of today's newspaper industry, the editor and management are huffing and puffing, playing the innocent, apologising, wailing, gnashing teeth and hoping that everything will go away. Internal communication - not a short-term solution
[Daniel Munslow] Internal communication (IC) is often viewed by organisations as a campaign that runs for a defined period of times and produces short-term results. Something's going on underground
[Gill Moodie: @grubstreetSA] The divide between the increasingly white-collar journalists and the more blue-collar production, sales and distribution departments is growing and, increasingly, people like you and me understand less and less about the nuts and bolts of the business of publishing. To train or not to train?
[Charlie Tagg] We, as a South African industry, underestimate the advantages of training. Our businesses believe that, by putting an operator in front of a workstation long enough, he or she will figure it out sometime, and thus we end up with the majority of editors in the market being 'self taught'. Our bosses won't invest in us, because "we will take the knowledge and go use it somewhere else", or "we are too busy on this project and cannot spare losing you for five days"...the list of excuses goes on.
