No Comment | One of the most blessed things about having a career in this industry is the people you work with. Then there is the continuous learning and the huge fun it can be. Writing about the media, marketing and advertising industry doesn't always feel like work. It is entertaining, exciting, engaging and often at the forefront of societal change - both as the driver and a reflection of transformative patterns. I've worked with some of the media greats in my 22-year career, both in my ‘previous life' in newspapers and in business-to-business publishing. While the late '80s/early '90s were among the best of times to be a newspaper journalist, documenting our turbulent journey to democracy, I consider being part of the team that has built the Bizcommunity brand over the past five years to be a significant career highlight. The Internet has set in motion a communications revolution as important as the development of the printing press all those hundreds of years ago, and there is no doubt that Bizcommunity.com has changed information flows in this industry remarkably since its launch in 2001. Being the editor and editorial director of this much-loved brand has been a privilege. It is with sadness that I say my farewells and move on to other opportunities in the industry in the new year. But it is certainly not a final goodbye, merely au revoir, as we explore partnership opportunities and I continue writing through Bizcommunity's pages.
Take care! Louise Marsland, editor: editor@bizcommunity.com. All marketing news to: marketingnews@bizcommunity.com. Responses to this column welcomed in our new online editor's column archive or on our blog: http://blog.bizcommunity.com.
| | Headlines MarketingThe wisdom in not knowing [Mike Freedman] The most astute marketer I worked with did not train as a marketer: Carol Grolman began as a secretary, became marketing director of Edgars and then Woolworths. Instead of a head cluttered with Porter, Aaker and Ogilvy, she relied on her gut and was brave enough to trust her instinct. Marketers, get your digital shift together! [Fred Roed] Marketing agencies can be forgiven for feeling a little insecure right now. Across the globe, scores of well-manicured fingernails are being gnawed to the quick. Friday afternoon champagne and sushi parties are being traded in for toasted sarmies; and the lines of coke have made way for lines of worry. Your customers have evolved into a community. Have you joined? [Jon Bishop] Yes, that is correct. Your customer stopped being your customer a few years ago when they realised that they truly do have the power, thanks to the advent of social media and price comparison sites and the like.
