Having just returned from the United States and interacted with some of the best B2B media brands in the world, I can honestly say that our digital B2B media brands are up there with the best globally: innovative, engaging with consumers and early adopters of mobile media platforms. So I'm particularly proud to announce what we think is a world first for a B2B media brand: a partnership with Nokia to supply our Bizcommunity.com editorial team with N82 mobile phones to truly enable mobile journalism (‘mojos') across our portals, including images and video. The Nokia N82 is the ideal broadcast tool with a five megapixel camera, powerful Xenon flash and fast camera activation, DVD-like quality video capture, high speed Wi-Fi connectivity and a one-click upload tool to online communities. We are also very excited to have uber-social media strategist and online activist, Vincent Maher, writing for us - his first column starts today. Now heading up social media at Vodacom, Vince is the guy behind some of the most innovative work online and new media thinking in recent years, as Mail & Guardian Online strategist and previously director of Rhodes University's New Media Lab. Bookmark his column now to find out what you should and shouldn't be doing online.

Enjoy! Louise Marsland, editor: editor@bizcommunity.com. All marketing news to: marketingnews@bizcommunity.com. Responses to this column welcomed in our new online editor's column archive or on our blog: http://blog.bizcommunity.com.

The Loerie Awards 200826 & 27 July 2008
Loeries Grands Prix for youth market campaigns
[Tshepiso Seopa] Whose mother wouldn't be proud if her creative child brought home a highly treasured bird, the Loerie Grand Prix award, after a weekend in Margate, KwaZulu-Natal? It's been almost a week since the excitement of the Loeries festival weekend and today we find out more about the concepts that won the judges' hearts, featuring Trigger Communications and the duo of Net#work BBDO and Gloo Digital Design.

Airport threatens Loeries from roosting in Margate
[Suren Naidoo] Margate wants the Loeries Awards extravaganza to roost in the town, but KwaZulu-Natal's new international airport at La Mercy, north of Durban, could see the South Coast hot spot losing the big event in 2010. That's because when the new airport opens in 2010, it will take more than two hours for Loerie Award delegates - more than 80% from Johannesburg and Cape Town - to drive from the new airport to Margate.

Scarce Gold Loerie goes to microsite
Gold Loeries were at a premium this year, with only 23 (19 Professional and four Student) being awarded. Communications services agency proximity#ttp was one of the select few, with a Gold Loerie for its Cell C campaign, Hummerville, in the Experiential, Digital - Microsite category, which also received a Silver, Bronze and a Craft Certificate in other categories.

Correction: 'Youngblood5' Loeries win not first Digital Grand Prix
Please note that we incorrectly reported that the GrandPrix for Net#work BBDO and Gloo Digital Design's ‘Youngblood5' in Experiential Digital Mixed-Media on Sunday night, 27 July 2008, was the first Grand Prix in the Digital category, based on information supplied from The Loerie Awards. It was in fact Tinderbox Interactive Cape Town for its self-promotional piece titled 'thinking multimedia' in 1998. It is, however, the first Digital Grand Prix awarded since the formation of the Loerie Awards as an independent association in 2005.

2010: SA as much to gain as Germany
[Michael Appel] Facing the highest unemployment rate since World War II, having crashed out of the Euro 2004 championship, Germany had hit a low point in 2004. That was until the thrill of hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup transformed the nation once divided by the infamous Berlin Wall.

PR's role in positioning Africa ahead of 2010
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Public relations practitioners (PRPs) can use the opportunity that 2010 has to offer to position the African continent by, among others, promoting the continent vibrantly and progressively, winning markets, changing minds and opening hearts, Kenya's Peter Mutie, of the Association of Public Relations of Africa (APRA), told delegates yesterday, Wednesday, 30 July 2008, during the 2010 National Communication Partnership Conference (NCPC) held at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg.

Let's not be distracted by 2010 rumours - Themba Maseko
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] As the 2010 fever grips the African continent and South Africa forges ahead with preparations, it seems Afro-pessimists - western media in particular - have also increased their campaign to fuel subjective reports about SA not being ready for 2010. But, speaking at the 2010 National Partnership Communication Conference (NCPC) in Johannesburg today, Wednesday, 30 July 2008, Government spokesperson Themba James Maseko called on all Africans not to be distracted by these rumours and be united and work together to host a successful 2010 soccer event.

Role of the media for 2010
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] The hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup by South Africa has created dangerous expectations among its people, some of whom are treating it as the second coming of Jesus Christ, City Press editor Khatu Mamaila told delegates attending the 2010 National Communication Partnership Conference (NCPC) currently taking place in Johannesburg. “It is the duty of the media to make sure that people get away from that kind of thinking.”

The channel has a tailor-made package that allows for the sharing of costs between the various entities and advertisers that fall within the footprint of that tourism area.

Spectre of product placement regulations
[Chris Moerdyk] There are distinct mutterings from the TV industry in the US about regulating branded television by forcing channels to identify product placement.
