| No Comment | What a week! It had all the makings of a soap opera… Scandal, intrigue, well-known personalities (in our industry at least), suspension, threats of criminal action, potential court cases, millions of rands at stake… I'm of course talking about ‘Mayhem at Media Park' and not the ‘Bold and the Beautiful'. I certainly haven't seen a more dramatic or well-attended press conference in this industry in the past decade or so as the one Media24 held last Wednesday – or quite as many mainstream follow-ups on an industry story. What is the saddest is the taint that lingers like a bad smell on all who work at Media24. That's unfair. It's also unfair to blame the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC). While industry whispers differ on whether a whistleblower or normal ABC processes picked up the irregularities in some of Media24's magazines – the fact is that the ABC was there . There are rules, regulations and strict processes that publishers have to follow these days and the process has been tightened up immeasurably in recent years. If anything, what has been proved is that the process does work – at least in recent times – and that any staff at any publishing house that know of or suspect irregularities within their own media houses or rivals have somewhere to report such things and know that they will be taken seriously. As Chris Moerdyk puts it in his column today on the debacle: “The ABC has come a long way in the past year or two but it cannot just sit back and assume that everyone is applauding it, because they aren't. Too many marketers see the Media24 debacle not as an example of ABC efficiency, but as a shortcoming. And that perception cannot be left to fester because the ABC above all other forms of media data is the one we are supposed to be able to trust implicitly.”
Have a great week! Louise Marsland, editor@bizcommunity.com. Marketing news: marketingnews@bizcommunity.com. Responses to this column welcomed on our blog.

[Paul Middleton] Last week's signing of the Marketing, Advertising & Communication (MAC) Transformation Charter introduces a significant chapter in our industry's progress in South Africa. | Magazines | | Media24: now the PR really starts [Chris Moerdyk] Perhaps the one little tiny sliver of silver lining on the otherwise dark cloud that sits over Media24 is that it has at least started its healing process on the right foot. By weathering the intense pain, suffering, indignity and humiliation of "owning up" to its corporate misdemeanour last week, Media24 has shown clear intent of the importance it places on not only remunerating its advertisers, but also on re-establishing itself as publishers of integrity.
Media24: profit and performance pressure cooker [Louise Marsland] Staff inside Media24 have spoken of unrelenting pressure to meet targets and profit margins as Bizcommunity.com message boards hummed yesterday with readers squabbling over who is to blame and likening the Media24 top brass to ‘Manto' and ‘Selebi' for remaining in their posts in the midst of a scandal. Our media partners, Zoopy.com, were also on hand to film the Media24 Cape Town leg of its damage control road show.
How did it all go wrong at Media24?
[Louise Marsland] In what has been described as one of the worst months in media giant Media24's history, the focus turns to how to deal with the fallout and how to prevent such a damaging scandal to the entire magazine publishing industry from ever happening again. Was it the fault of organisational culture? The increasing competition in the magazine marketplace, or just fraud on the part of a few individuals?
Potential criminal charges in Media24 scandal

ABC routine audit checks on all publishers In light of recent reports on circulation irregularities of certain Media24 magazine titles in the market place, the Audit Bureau of Circulations yesterday issued a press statement reiterating that it executes routine audit checks on all publishers.
Is Media24 the only culprit? [Chris Moerdyk] The big question that arises out of Media24's sensationally sad circulation saga is just how many other print publishers have also been playing silly buggers with their sales figures? Seems to me that along with Media24, when it comes to integrity having taken a tumble, this applies just as much to the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Criminal justice system to get 3rd Degree On Tuesday, 10 October 2007 at 8pm, e.tv's 3rd Degree will search for answers to a fiercely contested South African issue – Jackie Selebi's alleged links with the criminal underworld. When these were first exposed, no investigation was launched by Government into whether or not he is fit for office. But the Presidency has instead suspended and ordered a probe into the man who was investigating him, Vusi Pikoli. Is President Mbeki protecting Selebi and why? Can South Africans still have faith in a criminal justice system that appears riddled with politics? And how much does all of this have to do with the ANC's succession battle?

What is your view? | Should all publishing houses be audited? We all know about the recent audit of the 12 businesses of Media 24 but I think – as a member of the media and advertiser – that we work to get the ABC to do a full audit of all houses including RS&P, Associated and all concerned.
