Hear that sound? …Tweet tweet… Yes! It’s the sound of a Loerie calling! Okay, use your imagination. I know it’s the most bloody freezing winter in years and there’s still snow out there and baggies and bikinis are the last thing on your mind, but Loeries is back to mid-year this year and there’s ONLY about five weeks to go! And okay, I know it rained last year, that’s why it’s in July this year because it’s apparently nicer weather in winter (go figure), but it’s time to haul your beach bag out of mothballs, order a funky outfit, book your fake spray tan and get your groove on, people! While nothing will ever beat the raucous spontaneity of the first Margate Loeries, the event gets more polished and livelier each time, promising a great break from Jozi and enough material for the office water cooler chitchat for the rest of the year. The Loerie Committee, together with the sponsors and event organisers in Margate, this year have a whole programme of events and urge glamour, vintage or chic, for the two Loerie Awards ceremonies on the Saturday and Sunday nights. For all the detail, go to the official Loerie Awards website for more on the festival weekend, 28 – 29 July: www.theloerieawards.co.za. Cannes is this week and our creative man in Cannes, Stuart Stobbs, continues his amusing guest blogging this week on all the judging and partying. A Vista on marketing mistakes
[Chris Moerdyk] Microsoft is a miracle of marketing. There is no other explanation. It must be the only company in the world able to consistently make an absolute mint by launching new products so that are so flawed and frustrating that when you contact them to solve a problem they tell you to ask a friend because they quite frankly don't know the answer.

    Michael Porter live in SA
Corporate giving has fallen substantially in recent years because there is so little alignment between current giving practices and corporate objectives, according to the world's leading business strategist, Michael Porter, who returns to South Africa on 3 July 2007 for a full-day event organised by Global Leaders, following his half-day workshop for the Global Leaders Africa Summit a year ago.

    Theme-based real estate branding
[Naseem Javed] With some one thousand theme-based cities being developed at a phenomenal rate in the Middle East, the branding and name identities of such projects become nightmares. New media is not chaff
[Gino Cosme] Contrary to Kevin van Deventer's belief (see Separating the wheat from the new media chaff), new media does deliver real value, both “in terms of reach and impact”. If the vast majority of the world's communications, marketing, and web experts are saying the same, business owners, marketers, and communicators must start embracing this new “paradigm” if they're to maintain a competitive advantage. And that's the tipping point…

Oldies set to be biggest Internet surfers
[Chris Moerdyk] IT expert Colin Cullis, talking on presenter John Maytham's afternoon drive show on Cape Talk recently, came up with an item that certainly opened my eyes and brought a huge smile to my ageing face. The pitfalls of DIY recruitment
[Isobel McAleenan] How hard can it be to find a great candidate to work in your company? Certainly there are any number of managers who tackle the task of recruitment with optimism and confidence, only to discover that this path is a veritable minefield of nasty surprises waiting to undermine the very best of intentions.

Recruitment stalwart, Viv Gordon Placements celebrates 20 years in the industry - Viv Gordon Placements

    Retail
Capturing shoppers at point of purchase
[Louise Marsland] More than 70% of brand decisions are made in store where captive consumers become fickle shoppers who change their minds from point of decision to point of sale. The retail environment is a place where brand promises are made or broken in store and it is this fact that has promoted Ogilvy South Africa to launch Shopper Marketing, a tool to reach shoppers at that point of decision.

    Auction wines get the nod
Nederburg Auction manager Christine Joubert is delighted by the response to the wines on this year's line-up, tasted by some of the panellists visiting South Africa to judge at the recent Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show. About 140 wines, representing just under 70 producers, will come under the hammer of auctioneer Stephan Welz at Nederburg on 28 and 29 September 2007.

    Sponsorship

A finger lickin' good sponsorship deal
Popular chicken restaurant chain KFC announced earlier this week that is forging an association with star-studded music, youth and entertainment culture via an extensive six-month sponsorship campaign with MTV Networks Africa. The multi-property TV marketing deal sees the fast food retailer sponsoring MTV's three major entertainment award shows.

    Tea with a fashionable twist

Apart from being the official tea and hospitality partner. Five Roses will also sponsor one of the shows taking place at the Sandton Convention Centre.

    Sponsorships keep the wheels turning
[Alec Lenferna] Sponsorship is big business. No event in South Africa (particularly sports' related) is staged without sponsors being on board and, in fact, few sports' teams, whether national, provincial or local, get by without financial assistance from business. But does sponsorship of a sporting event really give value? I believe it can be hugely beneficial in building reputation and goodwill for a brand.

SABC up in arms over PSL, Supersport
"The so-called 'deal' reached between the PSL and Supersport on the broadcast rights is a laughable sham and has no force and effect and is calculated to mislead and confuse the public,” said group CEO of the SABC, Adv Dali Mpofu, in a press statement issued yesterday, Thursday, 14 June 2007.
