Well, one could be forgiven for thinking that the World Association of Newspapers (WAN) conference last week, including the World Editors Forum (WEF), was actually a conference about online media, because the lines are so blurred now between the different news mediums, we’ve all become purveyors of news using any medium at our disposal… be it online – from web to social media sites like YouTube, blogging and podcasts; print – newspapers with magazines; broadcast – sound and video, etc. In fact, we’re actually not even news mediums any longer, we’re building communities. Because engaging with your readers – in all forms possible and fulfilling all their needs (news, entertainment, fun, interaction, education etc) – you are building loyal communities of readers who feel that they have a stake in their medium of choice (you) and interact with you accordingly (commenting, providing news, columns etc). We’re taking that whole community thing further than our launch last week at WAN of our news blogs and vlogs (video) from WAN, with our man in Cannes this week: Stuart Stobbs, failed drag queen and now the creative dude at proximity#ttp (logical career trajectory it seems). He’s a judge and partygoer there and will be reporting regularly on the goings on, so keep a look out this week on Biz. Thanks also to our hardworking Jozi sales and marketing team for holding down the fort at Markex Johannesburg last week. Because Biz also has some expansion plans ready to launch (more about this soon!) we need to streamline some of our email addresses. Please start sending all news for this ezine (media, marketing, advertising South Africa) to: marketingnews@bizcommunity.com. My email address as editor of Biz Marketing and editorial director of Bizcommunity.com remains editor@bizcommunity.com for all strategic client contact, including queries, proposals, invites, confidential info, etc.

Keep warm! Louise Marsland, editor@bizcommunity.com. All news: marketingnews@bizcommunity.com

    High standards require clear ethics
[Winnie Graham] Editors are facing yet another dilemma as they grapple with a range of issues confronting them in the multimedia debate. Are the old values that applied in news papering an asset – or will they be a burden in the new era? Frits van Exter, former editor in chief of the Netherlands newspaper, Trouw, posed the question at a final sessions of the World Editors Forum in Cape Town this week when he warned that ethical standards and integrity were once again open to debate.

    Special feature:

Quality journalism in a free sheet
The future of the printed mass media will inevitably be about free newspapers. That was one side of a heated debate that raged between two Danish editors and a Dutch one, on the feasibility of producing quality journalism in a free sheet, at the 60th World Newspaper Congress and 14th World Editors Forum in Cape Town this week.

Innovation, embracing change key to surviving digital age
Innovation and embracing change were two keys to survival in the digital age, newspaper editors from the around the world were told this week. Gathering on the last day of the 60th World Newspaper Congress in Cape Town, 1600 editors, managers and publishers from more than 100 countries pondered successful strategies for coping in the era of multimedia, digitisation and convergence.

20 ways to leave an impression
[Louise Marsland] Newspaper newsrooms are being expanded globally, journalists retrained in multi-media functionality and consumers engaged with like never before. Journalism has become a conversation with your readers and communities. This may have been the World Association of Newspapers congress in Cape Town this week, but is there really any difference between the different media categories with digital innovation?

    Online news readership increases
[Louise Marsland] The use of online as a medium to source news and information is increasing in the developed nations, according to a readership survey commissioned by the World Association of Newspapers (WAN). This special survey on key newspaper readership issues and trends was conducted by Harris Interactive in conjunction with Innovation International Media Consulting Group for the Innovations in Newspapers 2007 report for WAN.

Innovation is the core in Africa
[Trevor Ncube] African editors and publishers need swift and smart thinking in order to withstand persecution in countries with prickly presidents and parliaments. When state adverts dry up, usually on order from on-high, new business models have to be invented on-the-fly.

Stop whinging about bad press – Guy Berger
The time has come for African journalists to stop whinging about the bad press their countries receive in the West and to start doing the job themselves. This is the message from Professor Guy Berger, head of the department of journalism at Rhodes University, who told the World Editors Forum in Cape Town this week that the time for moaning and mourning was time over. It was time to become “mesmerising” about Africa.

    How youth use media
Research released this week during a seminar on the eve of the World Newspaper Congress and World Editors Forum in Cape Town, South Africa, shows that young people perceive traditional media as more accurate, trustworthy and reliable than new media, but many get most of their news and information from another source entirely – family and friends.

Making money – fast – in media
How do you transform a solid newspaper business into a media company producing many millions of US dollars in earnings? You “try everything”, says Luis Fernando Santos, president of Casa Editorial El Tiempo in Columbia. Speaking at the 60th World Newspaper Congress in Cape Town this week, Santos gave media executives from around the world tips on how to boost profits in a world where print bosses find themselves in a mature industry.

    Zuma vs Phumzile over lunch
[Louise Marsland] One a former deputy president and the other, the current deputy president of South Africa, squared off with editors over lunch yesterday, Tuesday, 5 June 2007, at the World Association of Newspaper congress and World Editors Forum second day. Part history lesson and part campaign speeches, both Jacob Zuma and Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka put Africa on the newspaper editors' agenda.

    WAN releases strategic reports
Five new strategy reports on some of the most important recent developments in the newspaper industry globally – increasing digital revenue development, advertising best practices, innovative management systems, newspaper company reorganisation and the power of local focus – have just been published by the World Association of Newspapers. The reports were released yesterday, Tuesday, 5 June 2007, at the World Newspaper Congress and World Editors Forum in Cape Town, South Africa.

    Warnings over increasing media surveillance
The World Association of Newspapers has called on democratic governments to take specific measures to protect freedom of the press in the face of widespread tightening of anti-terrorism measures. WAN also issued several resolutions specifically highlighting abuse of media freedoms in various countries, one of them being Zimbabwe.

    World's press condemns Zimbabwe repression
The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) has condemned “the repressive government policy against a free press in Zimbabwe” and has called on President Robert Mugabe to stop arresting and harassing journalists and to uphold international standards of freedom of expression in the country.

    Press freedom theme spotlighted
[Louise Marsland] While the theme of this year's World Association of Newspapers Congress and World Editors Forum centres on reshaping newspapers and the impact of digital, press freedom remains a current theme addressed by many speakers on the opening day, Monday, 3 June 2007, including South African President Thabo Mbeki and WAN president Gavin O'Reilly.

    Global newspaper circulation, advertising increases
Newspaper circulations world-wide rose 2.3% in 2006 while newspaper advertising revenues showed substantial gains, the World Association of Newspapers announced yesterday, Monday, 4 June 2007. WAN said global newspaper sales were up +2.3% over the year, and had increased +9.48% over the past five years. Newspaper sales increased year-on-year in Asia, Europe, Africa, South America, with North America the sole continent to register a decline.

Three keys to 21st century media profitability
US newspaper executive Mark Contreras says three words have led his newspaper company to success that has exceeded wildest expectations – fragmentation, interactivity and accountability. Contreras, senior vice president: newspapers of The E.W. Scripps Company, was speaking on Monday, 3 June 2007 at the World Association of Newspapers (WAN) congress in Cape Town.

    Calls for African press freedom
Leaders of the world's press, meeting in South Africa this week, have called on African governments “as a matter of urgency” to abolish all laws that restrict press freedom, and have pledged to increase “aggressive and persistent campaigning against press freedom violations and restrictions in Africa”.

    Newspapers prospering despite themselves
[Chris Moerdyk] Newspapers are their own worst enemies, if statistics presented on the first day of the World Association of Newspapers Congress in Cape Town are anything to go by. Reporting on the state of the global newspaper industry, WAN chief executive Timothy Balding said that in spite of many media industry analysts sowing doom and gloom about falling newspaper circulations and drops in advertising revenue, this was an entirely wrong perception.

What does the 2012 Olympic logo prove?
[Naseem Javed] There is absolutely nothing wrong with the new London 2012 Olympics logo, but there is something seriously wrong with the logo-driven branding industry at large. This new logo clearly proves that, as we approach 2012, global society will not respond to conventional logos or graphics, but only to these kinds of insignificant, dysfunctional and obscure design works which will eventually become branding norms throughout the world.

    Innovation through line extensions
[Roman Cylkowski] Product and brand life cycles in the chocolate confectionery market are shortening, partly due to the intense competition in the marketplace. One of the ways in which companies are extending the life of their brands is through line and brand extensions.

    Who really owns your brand?
[Naseem Javed] You may think that you have an absolute, 100% ownership for your brand, yet if your name identity is shared with hundreds of others, then you clearly lack 100% ownership. What's the point of brand-building if you are simply brand-sharing?
