The Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (the ASA) is inviting all interested parties to submit proposals for amending the Code of Advertising Practice for the year 2009. Proposals should be well motivated and must reach the ASA by 31 March 2009. The Code is revised annually to keep pace with societal changes in South Africa as well as to reflect evolving advertising practice worldwide.

Our readers certainly think MTN overreacted! On 19 December 2007, the advertising watchdog Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled against Nando's Yellow Hummer advertising campaign saying it had deliberately copied MTN's advertising in a manner that was unacceptable.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled in December that Nandos' withdraw its “Yello Hummer” advertising of the Hummer vehicle prize and that all of its print ads, in-store promotions, as well as radio commercial material be withdrawn immediately. This follows a complaint lodged by MTN against the ad parody with the ASA.
