Sponsored finance and business reporting course for media

In an effort to promote quality and in-depth finance and business reporting, Old Mutual and the South African National Editors' Forum (SANEF) will again partner to produce a capacity-building initiative for mid-level journalists with at least three years' experience.

Frayintermedia will facilitate the second comprehensive six-day 'Finance and Business Reporting' course, being held in Johannesburg on 19-21 October and 9-11 November 2011. The course provides practical training in reporting business and public finance; analysis of the potentials and dangers of new media tools for gathering, analysing and reporting on finance issues; and creating networks between mid-level finance reporters and potential sources in the finance and business world, both corporate and government.

Apart from a field trip to the Johannesburg Stock exchange, a host of top finance and business lecturers have been invited to present on the following topics.

  • introduction to the basic structure and content of the income statement and balance sheet;
  • reading financial statements;
  • the rights and duties of financial journalists;
  • writing skills for specialist finance reporters;
  • new media resources for journalists

Participation is limited and candidates should submit applications before 30 September 2011. Though training takes place in Johannesburg, candidates from other regions are encouraged to apply, as their costs will be covered by the programme host.

Forward applications to moc.aidemretniyarf@ofni or go online to www.frayintermedia.com.
