'Yesterday' team heads for the Oscars!

Producer Anant Singh and Director Darrell James Roodt are on their way to Los Angeles to attend the Academy Awards on Sunday, 27 February 2005 where their film, Yesterday has been nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Following them later this week will be co-producer Helena Spring and lead star Leleti Khumalo. Yesterday's nomination marks the first time that a South African film has received the coveted recognition from the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The Yesterday team will also be attending the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday, February 26 in Santa Monica, California. Yesterday received a nomination in the Best Foreign Film Category which is unprecedented in the history of the Independent Spirit Awards as it is the first South African film to be nominated and it is also the first time that a film has been nominated without having a confirmed release date in the United States. The Independent Spirit Awards are widely considered to be the Oscars of independent cinema.

"We are thrilled to be in Los Angeles with Yesterday being nominated for both the Academy Awards and the Independent Spirit Awards," commented Singh. "We have our fingers crossed for a win at both ceremonies and are hopeful that we can bring home to South Africa a coveted Oscar when we return next week. We hope that Yesterday's success will give impetus to the South African film industry and that we see more local stories being turned into films in indigenous languages," added Singh.

Yesterday is currently playing exclusively at Cinema Starz at Grandwest in Cape Town and the Boardwalk in Port Elizabeth.

HBO Films presents Yesterday in association with Distant Horizon, a Videovision Entertainment Production in association with Nelson Mandela Foundation, M-Net, The National Film And Video Foundation and Exciting Films. The film was shot on location in KwaZulu Natal with the music composed by Madala Kunene and is executive produced by Sudhir Pragjee and Sanjeev Singh, produced by Anant Singh and Helena Spring; and written and directed by Darrell James Roodt.
