Standardising safety at exhibitions

The Exhibition Association of Southern African (EXSA) recently initiated a meeting to discuss safety issues surrounding the engineering of exhibition stands, to consolidate safety standards, inclusive of legal requirements, pertaining to exhibitions.

As the exhibition industry does not have its own set of regulations, the objective is to assist members of the exhibition industry to become more safety-conscious when designing and building stands. This could prevent accidents which could harm the industry as a whole.

A task team headed by Stefan Buss of IDG Johannesburg and a member of EXSA was charged with developing a simple set of standards for double storey stands, fire safety, general build-up safety and other safety issues.

The task team will approach this in a holistic manner, tackling the biggest problems first and involving consulting engineers, stand builders, venues and exhibition organisers.

Buss comments: "We are in the process of drafting guidelines for each party involved, which will be ready in the next couple of months."

For more information and details of the engineers forming part of this panel, please contact Stefan Buss on +27 11 474 3007 or or the EXSA office on +27 11 805 7272 or .
