The sea of blankets scattered around the Union Buildings is evidence of how South African's have come together to play their part for South Africa's success. Every citizen from every walk of life can make a difference by playing their part in whatever small way, and contribute to the building of a strong, vibrant and competitive South Africa for the future.
Brand South Africa's Chairman Chichi Maponya commended the thousands of South Africans who were present at the Union Buildings today for playing their part in lending a hand and knitting blankets for their fellow South Africans in order to keep the winter chills at bay.
The 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day campaign is an example of active citizenship at work. The notion of active citizenship is founded on the understanding that the developmental challenges facing South Africa can't be addressed by the government alone. Today, South African's have shown how by coming together for a good cause we can make a difference in the lives of our fellow citizens.
In her address to the audience at the Union Building, Maponya added the recent attacks on foreign nationals are contrary to the values of Ubuntu on which South Africa prides itself. She added that "we are stitching the wounds we have seen over the past few days" and Brand South Africa encourages all South Africans in their organisations or individual capacity to play their part in making a positive difference in the communities in which they live and operate.
