From today, BlackBerry users will be entitled to download up to US$100 of premium applications for their mobile phones as a gesture of goodwill from Research in Motion following the interruption of services that lasted for several days and prompted outrage among millions of users.

The applications will be available for download until the end of this year. The Mail & Guardian says that the list of applications range from games such as SIMS 3 and Bejeweled to Photo Editor Ultimate and Nobex Radio Premium.

RIM's enterprise customers would also be offered one month's free technical support. Those that have an existing technical support contract will be given an additional one-month free access while those that do not have a contract will be given a free trial of the BlackBerry technical support services.

Meanwhile, BlackBerry has also unveiled its new operating system planned for the latest phones that it is planning. The operating system is based on the QNX which is currently used on the PlayBook tablet.

RIM's chief executive Mike Lazardis says that the new operating system will give developers the tools they need to build new applications for the tablets and smartphones and the BlackBerry and QNX platforms will converge into the new BBX platform.
