Nombembe's successor sought
Parliament should be able to hire a new auditor-general by September. This is the view of Thaba Mufamadi, the newly elected chairman of the ad-hoc committee on the appointment of the auditor-general.
Mufamadi, who is also the chairman of the standing committee on finance, was unanimously elected as chairman after his predecessor Mike Masutha was promoted to deputy minister of science and technology.
Current auditor-general Terence Nombembe's term of office expires at the end of November. He wrote a letter to parliamentary authorities two months ago, calling on them to appoint his successor by September at the latest to ensure a smooth handover.
But the ad-hoc committee's progress in this regard has been slow and President Jacob Zuma threw a spanner in the works last week when he promoted Masutha.
The auditor-general's pay package was increased from R1.7m to R2.6m by Zuma last week. The post is likely to be advertised in newspapers this weekend. The minimum requirement is to be a qualified chartered accountant.
ANC chief whip Stone Sizani said he wished Nombembe well, describing him as "a person of highest integrity and dedicated servant of the people".
"We salute him for serving his office with such diligence and excellence for the past seven years. He will undoubtedly be leaving an institution with a remarkable reputation," said Sizani.
