MIT opens labs to everybody

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is developing technology that will allow students all over the world to use simulated laboratories, interact with professors and students and even earn certificates for their efforts.

Fin24 quotes MIT's Provost Reif as saying that the university wants to "reach everyone out there who can't be here" and interact with them. MIT has a worldwide reputation for its OpenCourseWare programmes, which offer 2100 courses on line, free.

Within the next few months students will be able to see sought-after lecturers from professors, engage in student discussion groups and take examinations. Students wanting to take the exams will have to pay a fee - although the fees have not yet been set.

It costs almost US$41 000 a year to study at MIT as a full-time student.
