The Blues Brothers back in space

I found the The Blues Brothers at the NewSpace Theatre to be a fun, high energy performance, with good singing, smart/stylish costumes and well thought out dance moves. Although the “Blues Brothers” movie may have been a fairly cultish hit in its day, I felt this musical can probably be enjoyed by everyone, even those who are not familiar with the antics of Jake and Elwood.

The five performers are well cast. I particularly enjoyed the energy and interaction between the two brothers in black hats and shades. Their witty dialogue, their athletic, funky dance and body moves are very in line with the original characters created by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. They are full of energy, which is sustained from start to finish. The three “Bluettes” are doing a lot more than just backing vocals, with each of them stepping forward to perform a couple of numbers. All five have strong voices, with the chance to sing songs that they can make their own. The dance sequences are well practiced and choreographed, with the small cast filling the stage.

There were several attempts to get the audience to participate, with clapping, singing, and at one point dancing along. While people were not exactly dancing in the aisles, it is the kind of show that will definitely get your foot tapping.

The one improvement I would make to this show is to give it a live band. The recorded backing tracks are not bad, but to have the sound being produced live on the stage, would have added another dimension to the performance.

The “Blues Brothers” will be filling the NewSpace Theatre from Monday till Friday, and twice on Saturday, till the 1st of August.

Cape MIC and The New Space Theatre have a number of tickets for The Blues Brothers at The New Space Theatre on Long Street in Cape Town to give away. The tickets are for tomorrow night's show (Wednesday the 8th of July). The performance starts at 8pm. If you would some of these tickets please let them know by calling 021 422 2033.
