New music festival to launch in Stellenbosch

A new music festival Dorpstraat Live!, will be held at Coetzenburg sport terrain, Stellenbosch, Western Cape on Saturday, 12 March, 2016. The festival will feature the biggest names in English and Afrikaans rock, dance and rap, including: Matthew Mole, Spoegwolf, The Plastics, Dan Patlansky, Bittereinder, Fokofpolisiekar, PHFat, and GoodLuck

Bittereinder sounds like rap but feels like Afrikaans when, in fact, they are both. Bittereinder is three relatively good-looking young Pretorian men who unimaginably overcome their respective quarter-life crises to produce a series of works that verge on the magnificent and border on being inexcusably ridiculous. Bittereinder’s music rubs noses with the language that you speak at home, massages the shoulders of your favourite book, and French kisses your ideas about God.

PHFat have had an incredible run in 2014 and 2015, with singles and videos lauded as the best in South Africa, as well as major performances at Oppikoppi and Rocking the Daisies. PHFat also received two MK Award nominations for Best Video and Best Live Act. The band released their latest single, Lights Out, which received playlisting from 13 radio stations across South Africa, including MFM, 5fm, YFM and GoodHope FM.

An artists’ wish list

In just over four years GoodLuck have gone from knowing very little about electronic music to recording their second album outside. In the desert. Using only the sun to power their infectious beats. Their list of achievements and conquests reads like an artists’ wish list: nine top 10 radio singles, five number one hits, five SAMA nominations, a top 10 iTunes Netherlands hit with Taking it Easy, and over 500 performances around the world. Yet, as their fans know, the artists who make up GoodLuck - Juliet Harding (lyricist and vocalist), Raiven Hansmann (keys and sax) and Ben Peters (producer and sampling) - are too down to earth to let the enormity of their success change who they are: “We are the nerds of the music industry!” Living out the adventure of their lives it seems hard that such a moniker should be fitting to describe this phenomenal band, but their humility and approachability makes it surprisingly apt.

Fokofpolisiekar, Matthew Mole and Dan Patlansky require no major introduction. Cape Town locals, Fokofpolisiekar are one of the most recognisable rock bands in South Africa, breaking through the language barrier by appealing to English and Afrikaans fans. Matthew Mole are currently the most iconic pop solo artists while Dan Patlansky is recognised as one of the top blues guitarists in South Africa.
