Ingcwaba lendoda lise cankwe ndlela, a moving and powerful play by the Magnet Theatre, directed by GIPCA project awardee Mandla Mbothwe, will be at Artscape Cape Town from 10 to 21 February 2010. Told in isiXhosa with English subtitles this professional production explores economic migration and its impact, using traditional story-telling, rituals, song, physical theatre and multi-media.

With the N2 highway as a constant backdrop, stories are woven together in rituals of departure and arrival and the spaces in between. It explores the physical, emotional, spiritual and intellectual movement of black South Africans, specifically those whose origins lie in the Eastern Cape. The performers include award-winning actress Faniswa Yisa and the Magnet Theatre Educational Trust trainees.

Ingcwaba lendoda lise cankwe ndlela, an isiXhosa phrase meaning ‘the grave of the man is next to the road', has received critical acclaim and was initially performed as part of Infecting the City, followed by the Grahamstown National Arts Festival, and performances and workshops in King Williams Town and Port Elizabeth.

Ingcwaba lendoda lise cankwe ndlela has been made possible thanks to funding from the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA http://www.gipca.uct.ac.za/ ), the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, the National Arts Council and ProHelvetia.

Tickets (price R50 per adult or R35 for students and pensioners) are available through Computicket www.computicket.co.za or Artscape Dial A Seat on (021) 421 7695.
