Local celebrity designer now available at Edgars

Following his launch at SA Fashion Week back in February 2006, Thula Sindi has been described as a formidable force in the local fashion industry. His ready-to-wear collection is now available at selected Edgars stores in Melrose Arch and Sandton City in Johannesburg, the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town and the Pavilion in Durban.

"Sindi is a key player in the local space. In addition to having a desirable product, he has a long-term vision and determination, which we believe will lead to huge success in the future," says Sally-Anne Jackson, Edgars' GM of ladies and men's buying.

Made for career women who want to stand out from the crowd, his clothes are beautifully designed and manufactured to a very high standard. Significant emphasis is placed on well-priced investment pieces that are easy to wear and transition from day to night. His choice of fabrics and finishes, such as buttons and stitching, as well as his tailoring demonstrate a fine eye with deep attention to detail.

According to Jackson, his work is flamboyant and masterful. "Everything he does comes with a twist, skirts are voluminous with bold, brave colour-blocking techniques and tops are smattered with cheeky polka dots. His clothes are for women with oodles of personality and a strong sense of their individual style and future path. He is simultaneously dynamic and trendy, sophisticated and timeless."

Some key items are his signature twist dress, a LBD with a sequined panel and a two-tone colour-block dress. The range has wide appeal for women of all body shapes, with prices from R590 to R1300.

Jackson adds that it's important to bear in mind that this isn't a Sindi-for-Edgars range. "This is the same collection that he offers to his private clients. At some point in the process, every piece passes through his hands, so our customers are getting the same boutique quality and style as stars like Bridget Masinga, Caprice, Liesel van der Westhuizen, Noni Gasa, Penny Lebyane and Precious Moloi-Motsepe."

After graduating from the International School of Fashion in London, Sindi completed a three-month internship in the women's apparel buying department of a national retailer before becoming the head designer at the Dutch textile company, Vlisco SA. Here, he created women's wear and menswear alongside Malcolm Kluk and Palesa Mokubung. After 18 months, he took a freelance position with Gavin Rajah, developing his own range, in between projects. He has taken his collections to fashion weeks throughout Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, winning numerous awards and accolades over the years.
