The annual Illovo Eston MTB Challenge 2012 on 5 August 2012, will see 5FM personality, Damon Kalvari, don his ROAG (Race Organisers Admin Group) kit and ride with the ROAG Team in which is reportedly one of South Africa's most prestigious one-day mountain bike events.

"I'm really looking forward to the race. I've been training now for just over a year and there's a possibility that I will finish the race," he said. He will also be riding with the ROAG Team for the Sunday Tribune Jeep Hill 2 Hill on 15 September.

Nicole Talbot, business manager for ROAG, said she had the honour of riding with Kalvari last year. "It was great fun - his consistent good humour throughout the tough ride made it an entertaining experience! His determination and perseverance was a true inspiration for our team and we can't wait to spend the morning riding with him again at this event."

Marketing and communications manager for Illovo Sugar, the major sponsor for the event, Darrell de Wet said this year's Illovo Eston MTB race will once again prove to be an exciting event. "There are new tracks and routes available on all three of the routes and entries are pouring in. Riders who have not already entered are requested to do so as soon as possible."

Additions to course setup

The course setup will be similar to the successful 2011 layout, but will have some additions.

The 60 km route, which has been shortened from the 75km distance two years ago, and the 40km takes in much of the Eston area, including the vast sugarcane fields and indigenous forests that line the agricultural lands. The Tala 18km family ride offers a unique opportunity for riders to get up close with its wildlife, from rhino to zebra to giraffe. This is the only chance during the year that the public gets to ride in the area. The kids will not be forgotten with the Milky Lane 10km ride, which provides family fun on the same course as 2011.

"As hosts of the challenge, the community is excited to once again welcome people to the Eston area. We have catered for as many people and families as possible and trust that all riders and non-riders will enjoy their day out in Eston," said one of the event organisers, Stu Berry.
