Mbombela name-change row heads to high court
The Lowveld Chamber of Business and Tourism (LCBT) is trying to raise R300 000 to cover the cost of a Pretoria High Court presentation. LCBT financial and admin manager Linda Grimbeek said in a written appeal that the LCBT would "like to make an urgent appeal to all Nelspruiters to contribute towards the [....] legal fees to get Nelspruit's name back once and for all." Grimbeek asked supporters to use their influence to inspire friends and business associates to contribute whatever they could afford to the effort. She said LCBT had a "very strong case".
The LCBT is arguing that the process to change Nelspruit's name to Mbombela was flawed and unfair. After the chamber and its partners consulted legal experts, it was agreed to fight to have the name-change reversed. Grimbeek said the initial fee for an unopposed application to have the name changed back to Nelspruit had already been raised. "This legal battle will be long and expensive," she said, adding that the LCBT needs "a lot more funds as this case advanced to an opposed case and will be heard in the Pretoria High Court soon," she said. "Those who were following the news would know that [LCBT had] a very strong case. We are 100% committed to this task," Grimbeek said.
