Earth Day celebrated with a beach clean-up

Learners from Sivile Primary School in Khayelitsha and Xolani Primary School in Gugulethu were eager to play their part in this year's Earth Day celebrations and they did so by picking up waste on Strandfontein beach on Saturday, 21 April 2012. This beach is well known for having the biggest tidal swimming pool in the Southern Hemisphere.

The City of Cape Town's WasteWise project, in conjunction with Peninsula Beverage Company (PenBev), worked together to recognise Earth Day this year by hosting the beach clean-up. The project formed part of PenBev's "Live for a Difference" campaign, where caring for the environment is one of the many focus areas.

Youth must play a role

"We are very happy to be collaborating with the City of Cape Town and teaching the learners about the importance of looking after the earth. It is important that the youth play a role in keeping our environment clean and by participating in initiatives such as Earth Day, they are doing just that," said Stuart McLeod, managing director of PenBev.

Learners from across the Peninsula have been actively involved in cleaning up beaches in Cape Town since 2004. These clean-ups have been made possible by PenBev, who provide transport, health and safety equipment as well as refreshments at each of the clean-ups.
