Family teams compete in Spur competition
Fourteen parent-and-child teams in Cape Town and, a week later, 11 parent-and-child teams in Joburg came together to create culinary delights and compete for the Best Cupcake and Best Burger title and prize. The teams were made up of mum and son, mum and daughter, and father and son.
Each parent-child team was given the challenge of baking and decorating cupcakes, as well as making burgers. To add a unique twist to their creations, they were also given the opportunity to include their favourite Spur Sauce as an ingredient.
Ability to work together
Hosted by well-known foodie Justine Drake, the events kicked off with the baking and decorating of cupcakes. Each team was judged on its ability to work together, how creatively they decorated the cupcake and how the cupcake tasted. In Cape Town mum-and-daughter team, Shona and Faye (8 years old) Breytenbach won the Best Cupcake prize for their creation and in Joburg mum-and-daughter team, Grace and Masego (8 years old) Hlatshaywo were declared the winners.
The Best Burger challenge focussed on working together, taste of the patty and ingredients used as toppings for the burger. The Best Burger prize in Cape Town went to mum-and-son team Lezaan Davids-Downes and 9-year-old Thorique Davids. Apart from cooking the patty to perfection, their combination of toppings (mashed avocado, cheese, tomatoes, peppers) was delicious and worked well together. In Joburg mum-and-daughter team, Pearl and 10-year-old Keamohetsoe Molefe created the winning burger.
"The competition was fierce. All the teams worked so well together, reminding us how important it is for families to cook together and eat together," said Joe Stead, Creative Director of Spur Steak Ranches.
