Your SMS feeds 12 hungry people
In marking World Food Day on Sunday 16 October 2011, FoodBank encouraged the public to give up the cost of a meal by donating R20 to help feed hungry people. SMS the word 'FoodBank' to 40421 and the R20 donation will feed 12 hungry people. The line will be active for donations until 31 January 2012.
The non-profit company FoodBank SA, launched in 2009 and in its first two years, it donated approximately 32 million meals countrywide, with an estimated value of R121 million. The majority of this food would otherwise have ended up in landfills. The organisation already provides food support to more than 1000 agencies, which collectively benefit more than 203 000 hungry South Africans, mostly orphans and vulnerable children, the aged, people suffering from HIV/Aids and the unemployed.
