Orphans get monthly birthday bash from Pan Africa
The orphaned and vulnerable children of Alexandra Township will get a monthly birthday bash from the area's Pan Africa Shopping Centre, which has pledged its support for the Alexandra-based MaAfrika Tikkun's community outreach effort.
The functions will be held at the Phuthaditjaba Community Centre, which was built by the MaAfrika Tikkun's partnership with prominent community leaders and the board of the Phuthaditjaba Luncheon Club. This community centre has proved invaluable to the community, offering a haven for the young and elderly.
"This is one of the ways in which we hope to give back to the community in a meaningful and regular manner. The parties promise to be fun and provide some upliftment for these children who attend the centre's homework programme and other social support activities," says Nkosinathi Mayisela, centre manager of Pan Africa Shopping Centre.
The centre offers a day clinic, as well as recreational and educational activities for over 200 children daily, and also feeds 200 elderly residents. It provides skills training and includes a library, feeding kitchen, computer centre, sewing room and an administration block where the home-based caregiver programme is managed.
