Volunteer on Mandela Day with books, time
Convened by Well Read Books, the Mandela Day book sale will benefit Wola Nani, an NGO that supports women, orphans and vulnerable children infected and affected by the AIDS pandemic.
In keeping with the spirit of volunteerism that Mandela Day celebrates and Madiba's 67 years of service, various celebrities will make their contribution by giving up 67 minutes of their time to operate various tables at the book sale. SAFM broadcaster Nancy Richards, the author of Women Today: A Celebration of Fifty Years of South African Women, is among the prominent local personalities who will earn their volunteer stripes by giving of their time at the preview book sale.
Volunteer three ways
Cavendish Square has initiated a programme, which offers customers three easy ways to 'lend a hand', to the Mandela Day Campaign:
- The public are invited to devote 67 minutes of their time to clearing out their bookshelves and donating their unwanted books for the various charities participating in the annual August sale. Collection bins will be placed in the centre forecourt where people can bring books;
- They are encouraged to support the sales by buying a book or two;
- The Volunteer Centre will be on hand to encourage people to sign up for an array of NGOs that need their help.
In the words of Nelson Mandela, "It is time for the next generations to continue our struggle against social injustice and for the rights of humanity. It is in your hands."
