Schools help fight childhood obesity

Two Eastern Cape schools are leading the way in beating childhood obesity by offering kids better playgrounds - and they have won R10,000 each for their efforts.

Clarendon Preparatory School for Girls in East London and Victoria Primary School in Grahamstown were among six schools which each won R10,000 in a Discovery Vitality challenge to promote exercise and help combat obesity in school children across the country.

The national awards were given to schools for their design, development and implementation of a playground circuit that increased learners' participation in physical activity.

Playground circuits are a great way to get kids active during physical education classes, breaks and after school.

Clarendon principal Beverly Keth said their circuit was implemented in 2009 after a visit to a Cape Town school which already had one set up.

“We modified their idea, and designed it to suit our children,” she said.

Keth said that when school teacher Mandy Buyf saw an invitation for entrants in October last year she entered the school, and that they were ecstatic to be chosen as one of the winning schools.

They plan to put their prize money towards buying and improving sports equipment.

Victoria Primary's principal Christine Jones said the circuit provided an ideal way for her pupils to exercise their muscles.

Their money would go towards buying more apparatus for exercise and sports in the school.

Discovery Vitality's head of Vitality Wellness, Dr Craig Nossel, said: “Establishing exercise as an enjoyable and regular habit in childhood can go a long way to curbing obesity and preventing chronic diseases later on in life.”
