The National Education, Health, and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) on Monday said it supports the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Unions (Saccawu) and the Anti-Wal-Mart Coalition in their fight to ensure that the rights of workers are not eroded by one of, what it calls, the 'worst employers in the world' - Wal-Mart, which is bidding for Massmart.
"Wal-Mart is a company that uses the services of labour brokers and promotes casual labour and is known for using aggressive and backward tactics to prevent its employees from joining trade unions," said Nehawu.
Wal-Mart is one of the biggest culprits and proponent of capitalist globalisation that results in big economic inequalities by denying workers their rights and using its enormous muscle to bully suppliers and competitors," it added.
Track record
Nehawu said that a country with enormous socio-economic challenges such as South Africa needs to be wary of greedy multinationals with a bad reputation and a track record of violating worker's rights and working conditions.
"Wal-Mart is faced with several lawsuits from workers who accuse the company of failing to pay them their overtime and has also been accused of all forms of discriminations," the union said.
Nehawu said it believed that South Africa needed to do its utmost to encourage investment in the country but not at the expense of workers, and it demanded that all companies who invest in South Africa need to abide by the International Labour Organisation ILO standards.
'Obscene' salaries?
The union also pledged solidarity to the striking Pick n Pay employees.
"We call on the company to accede to the reasonable demands of the workers who work long hours to make a fortune for the shareholders.
"The senior managers of Pick n Pay give themselves obscene salaries and bonuses yet they fail to pay their employees who work extremely long hours a living wage," it said.
"We call on all South Africans to boycott all Pick n Pay stores until they pay workers decent wages and we also warn the scabs not to sabotage the working class struggles by crossing the picket lines," the union added.
