Microsoft to kick off retail gambit

USA: Microsoft is planning to open its first two retail stores in Arizona and California this fall.

The software maker said Tuesday, 28 July 2009, it signed leases at shopping centers in Mission Viejo, California and Scottsdale, Arizona. The Shops at Mission Viejo is already home to an Apple store. The other location, Scottsdale Fashion Square, does not have a competing Apple shop.

The stores will sell computers, software, media players and video games. Microsoft says the stores will not be mere showcases, but neither are they meant to take over sales from the big box stores that already sell many of its products.
