Kraken Black Spiced Rum washes up on South African shores

The entertaining brand narrative and vintage-style packaging (the bottle is a replica of a double-handled Victorian rum bottle) could quite easily have consumers believe this rum just fell from the hull of a passing pirate ship. London based Stranger & Stranger, responsible for the package design has consistently scooped top awards.

The Kraken, a monstrous squid, is said to have wreaked havoc with tall ships throughout history and dragged god-fearing seamen to watery deaths; the rum was named after it for being as dark, strong and mysterious as the ink of the beast.

The brand following in the US has given rise to Kraken games, videos, survival testimonials, charts that indicate its size, décor items and an App, amongst other things.
