For the second consecutive year, a Nelson Mandela Bay retailer has come out tops in the land.
At the 2009/10 Spectrum awards last week - hosted by the South African Council of Shopping Centres - the Cattle Baron restaurant in Sunridge Village was named Retailer of the Year.
The gala event in Johannesburg recognises excellence in the retail industry. The 2008/09 national Retailer of the Year Award went to Bay jeweller Francarlo's.
“We are over the moon about bringing the trophy back to the Eastern Cape again,” said Cattle Baron owner Maria Frangopoulos.
She said to be in the running for the national award, retailers had to first excel on a provincial level.
“We managed to do this by winning the Eastern Cape Restaurant of the Year Award as well as Eastern Cape Retailer of the Year Award last year.”
Cattle Baron then had to battle things out against top retailers from across the country, including jewellers, major chains like CNA, and retailers from leading shopping centres such as Canal Walk in Cape Town.
“When they called us on stage to hand over our gifts for reaching the finals, we thought that this was it. We didn't dream of winning the overall award.”
Frangopoulos said she was especially proud to have been able to bring the trophy back to the Eastern Cape again.
“I am especially proud of Port Elizabeth, and it shows that we have service excellence.”
