Represent opens first African store in Cape Town, with Johannesburg next

British luxury streetwear brand Represent has made its African retail debut with the opening of its first flagship store at Cape Town's V&A Waterfront, establishing a physical foothold in the market as it prepares to expand into Johannesburg.

The store, which opened in August 2026, marks the beginning of a broader African growth strategy for the brand, founded by brothers George and Michael Heaton in 2011.

Located at Shop 7217 on the Upper Level of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, the flagship gives South African consumers their first permanent physical Represent experience, combining the brand's latest collections with a dedicated 247 space focused on performance and elevated everyday essentials.

The expansion reflects the growing role of premium streetwear within South Africa's fashion and luxury retail landscape, while giving international brands an opportunity to build physical relationships with consumers who may already know them through digital channels.

From digital community to physical retail

Represent has spent more than a decade building an international following around British luxury streetwear, with its proposition centred on premium materials, craftsmanship, contemporary design and performance.

Its move into physical retail in South Africa is intended to build on that existing digital community while creating a more immersive brand experience.

The Cape Town location was designed by London-based Scratch Creative in collaboration with Raph and Matt Fitters, translating Represent's international retail identity into a permanent African setting.

The choice of the V&A Waterfront also places the brand within one of South Africa's most established fashion, lifestyle and tourism destinations, providing access to both local consumers and international visitors.

“We are excited to bring Represent to the South African market and see the potential for the brand across Africa,” says George Heaton, co-founder of Represent.

“South Africa has developed a strong appreciation for premium streetwear, and we believe this is the right time to introduce the physical Represent experience to both the community that already knows and supports us and a new generation discovering the brand for the first time.”

Johannesburg next

Represent's South African footprint will expand again in October 2026, when the brand plans to open a second store at Sandton City in Johannesburg.

The move gives Represent a presence in two of the country's most prominent retail markets, with Cape Town providing the initial flagship platform before the brand enters Johannesburg's premium retail environment.

The expansion is being led in Africa by entrepreneur Victor Barbosa and business partner Byron Ryan, who bring local retail and market expertise to the venture.

South African DJ Shimza (Ashley Raphala) has also joined the venture as a partner. His involvement adds a cultural dimension to the expansion, bringing together retail experience, local influence and an existing connection to the brand.

For Represent, the combination of physical locations and local partnerships provides a route to building a market presence that goes beyond simply importing an international label into South Africa.

Retail and digital expansion

The physical rollout will be supported by a dedicated South African digital platform, with Represent planning to launch an official local website towards the end of 2026.

The website will give consumers across the country direct access to Represent's collections, complementing its growing store network and extending the brand's reach beyond the major retail centres.

The combination of stores and local e-commerce reflects a broader shift in luxury and premium fashion, where physical retail increasingly works alongside digital channels to build brand discovery, community and consumer access.

For Represent, the Cape Town flagship is therefore more than a first store. It establishes the foundation for a South African retail network while providing a platform from which the brand can assess and develop its wider African ambitions.

With Cape Town now open, Johannesburg next and a local e-commerce platform on the way, Represent is positioning South Africa as its entry point into the next phase of its African growth.
