The current power crisis in South Africa set the context for the annual Design Indaba this year, in that the usual ‘change the world' and ‘save our planet's resources', from the very socially responsible and aware mainly European delegations, were even more meaningful for those of us present last week in Cape Town. Bottom line – it is up to all of us to make a difference and maybe it will start to sink in here as we face our own resources issue, because no matter who is at fault, we cannot take our planet for granted any longer. We all have to do our bit, as media in reportage, designers in what they design, what they design on (materials), and marketers in what packaging they chose and the focus of their brand campaigns. A mantra that came through strongly and something we all need to keep in mind to create a sustainable future for all, is: “What did you do to change the world today?” With load shedding due to resume this week, it is poignant. Have a look at the amazing Professor Shinichi Takemura, a renowned media producer from Japan with his Tangible Earth project, www.tangible-earth.com. He's created the first 10 million to one digital scale model of the earth where any man-created or environmental event can be plotted in. His philosophy is that if we were properly connected to global events, hearing the screams of victims real-time for example or watching forests being denuded in front of our eyes, we would react differently and be more sensitised.

Go make a difference! Louise Marsland, editor: editor@bizcommunity.com. All marketing news to: marketingnews@bizcommunity.com. Responses to this column welcome on our blog: http://blog.bizcommunity.com.

Headlines

Design Indaba 2008        27 to 29 February 2008

Designing a global window to connect the world
[Louise Marsland] On Friday, 29 February 2008, we listened to water dripping into an earthen jar in a temple in Tokyo, on the other side of the world – in real time. It was rather calming. One of Design Indaba's most inspirational speakers was Professor Shinichi Takemura, a renowned media producer from Japan, who is trying to get across the message that we are all connected through the Internet and each other to our planet.

The new globalism
[Terry Levin] As the third and last day of the 11th Design Indaba came to a close last week, it became increasingly apparent that it is pointless designing anything now unless it directly contributes to the wellbeing of people and their environment.

The soul of design
[Terry Levin] As the second day of Design Indaba 11 got into its stride yesterday, Thursday, 28 February, 2008, it became clear that the relationship between the way anything works and looks and the way it makes you feel is at the heart of all design thinking. In fact, design is impossible without both thinking.

The peak of creative excellence
[Louise Marsland] From Big Foot to the worst loo in the world and vampire fish, Ogilvy Johannesburg executive creative director Gerry Human used a ‘mountain' analogy to talk about the best advertising in the world – that peak of excellence, the weird and the wonderful, this morning, Friday, 29 February 2008, at this, the final day of the 11th annual Design Indaba.

The design of injustice
[Terry Levin] From the humble beginnings of all of nine speakers in 1995 to more than three times that number in 2008 – who would have thought that in 11 years the Design Indaba and the South African design scene would have evolved so much?

Winning Ogilvy CT ad created without electricity
Ogilvy Cape Town's art director Jennifer Macfarlane and copy writer Cuan Cronwright are the winners of The Times Young Creatives Competition, held 23 – 26 February 2008 at this year's Design Indaba Expo.

A week of creative focus in Cape Town
[Louise Marsland] The annual creative industries showcase, the Design Indaba Expo, ended yesterday, Tuesday, 26 February 2008, to make way for the annual Design Indaba Conference, starting today, Wednesday 27 February. With a host of inspiring speakers in the design, advertising, architectural and fashion industry, Design Indaba is known for attracting global talent to the podium. Bizcommunity.com was there too providing a comfy pew or two...

Food, glorious food

An industry that lives its craft
Day one of the annual Design Indaba showcase was all about, well, design. And this was reflected in the design of the food, décor and delegates to the event at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. This is an industry that lives its craft. View our gallery of day one.

Strategic marketing, 7de Laan and Telkom - Opulent Consulting
Many people claim to be “marketing strategists” or claim to offer strategic marketing services. Is it a term that we just plaster over everything to make us sound more educated than we really are? Or is it like Big Foot and the Loch Ness Monster: everyone's heard about it, but how many people have actually seen it?
