Here's my birthday wish to all of you - make it count!
It's our birthday this month. We were formed 24 years ago on a wave of optimism and the promise that we would make a difference. 1999 is a long way back, it's a long time ago. We were literally on top of the world then; Nelson Mandela had just stepped down after an incredible single term in office, South Africans had conquered Everest. That's when we opened our doors. 18 May 2023 Read more

Learn to tame the tiger (and the staffer) in the disciplinary process
Disciplinary hearings are often among the hardest jobs any manager can face. They are cloaked in legalese, very formulaic in procedure and yet invariably very personal. Some managers try to shy away from ever getting involved, but this can have disastrous consequences, far worse than facing up to the petulant anger of the (guilty) employee, many of whom will deliberately get personal in a hearing to deflect attention and disrupt the proceedings. 28 Apr 2023 Read more

It's time for women leaders to hold the ladder for others, not let it go
I had the privilege of attending a women in leadership function in Pretoria earlier this month and I was struck by two very different perceptions of women leadership, especially in the c-suite. What made these perceptions even more profound, is that I knew that they are both true. 23 Mar 2023 Read more

No business in the bedroom, but don't be mum in the boardroom
How honest are we really? It's not a trick question, but perhaps the most profound one all of us will have to answer this year - and every year - because if we are really honest with ourselves, we aren't that honest with others. 20 Feb 2023 Read more

Make this year, your year
Welcome back! Happy New Year! You are all refreshed and energised, you're raring to go. That's brilliant because your staff need to feel that energy, they need to draw from it. They need to hear your vision for the year, understand your purpose, so that the entire team can start the new year of opportunities on the right note. 24 Jan 2023 Read more

Don't let WFH become WTF next year
Flexible work is a thing. It was one of the fruits of Covid-19 and it's not going to go away anytime soon. But it might be a poisoned fruit with two very different consequences that no one ever saw coming, both of which could leave a very bad taste in your mouth and a very upset stomach - they might even be fatal to your career. 25 Nov 2022 Read more

It's time to start talking about the B-word
It is that time of the year again. We are all tired. You can see it in the productivity. You can see it in the attitudes. It's been a busy year for most of us, coming out of the old normal and making sense of the new normal. 21 Oct 2022 Read more

This Heritage Day, find out how much of your culture is actually welcome at the office
On 24 September 2022, South Africa celebrates Heritage Day. It's a wonderful day to take stock and celebrate our nationhood through our differences, but how much of our heritage is actually welcome at the office? 22 Sep 2022 Read more

C-suite shouldn't cost you motherhood and a family
Every Women's Day, we think of those brave women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 and told apartheid prime minister JG Strijdom: "Wathint'abafazi, Strijdom, (You strike a woman, Strijdom)" they told him, "wathint'imbokodo (you strike a rock)." 5 Aug 2022 Read more

You are not alone, says human resources expert
This month, the company I co-founded on Worker's Day in 1999 turns 23. It's a strange time. We've just come through Covid-19. We've survived the pandemic, but we've all experienced it. We see it in our business, in our staff and among our clients: Covid-19 wrought incredible trauma; there's rampant joblessness in the country, companies are retrenching, relationships are being mangled. 27 May 2022 Read more

If you want to get ahead, don't take an arm and a leg
A job is more than something you do from 9 to 5 from Monday to Friday. It's a relationship between the employer and the employee. Show up every day, produce what you are expected to do and at the end of the month you'll get a salary. You'll even get paid days off, the more months you work. If you're really lucky you might even get your company to make contributions towards your medical and pension costs. You might even get a bonus in the form of a 13th cheque. 7 Apr 2022 Read more

Repay the debt we owe corporate whisteblowers
One of the saddest aspects of the current state of business in South Africa is the incredibly high level of malfeasance, whether in the highest echelons of listed companies, state-owned enterprises (SOEs) or the public service. We read almost every day of the consequences of corruption and collusion. 7 Mar 2022 Read more

Social media impacts your career
This is going to be the year of change. You only have to pick up the papers or switch on the TV. Everything is swirling about. We are in year three of the pandemic. Should we vaxx - or not? Are we sheeple for listening to the government, wearing masks and keeping out of crowded spaces - or are we concerned and committed citizens? 3 Feb 2022 Read more

Give yourself the biggest gift this Christmas, time to introspect
As business leaders, especially C-Suite executives, head into the final straight before the much-needed year-end break, some will be thinking about really personal issues: their bonuses and incentives that they might be hoping for but might not get. Others will just be wanting to switch off and get away to enjoy some much-needed downtime after another tough year in corporate frontline. 6 Dec 2021 Read more

Diversity is not about ticking boxes, but actually fixing the bottom line
One of the things that has concerned me this year is the continuing reluctance of some C-Suite executives, and particularly CEOs, to properly grasp the nettle when it comes to representativity and especially equity in their organisations. 4 Nov 2021 Read more

Persevere to find a suitable C-Suite role
The high rate of unemployment doesn't just affect the bottom end of the market, it affects every level of our economic ecosystem all the way through to the boardroom - and the pressures and fears are exponentially worse, the higher you go. 5 Oct 2021 Read more

CEOs and the true cost of Covid-19 - for them
Covid-19 has taught us many things, it's also changed the fundamentals of how we do things. There are very few areas that have been left unscathed, whether it's how we work to how we shop and even how we relax. The C-suite is no exception, particularly the role of the all-important chief executive officer (CEO). 1 Sep 2021 Read more

The Hawthorne Effect and the future leadership attributes required
The Hawthorne Effect was discovered because of research commissioned at a Western Electric parts factory in Hawthorne, Illinois. The study was commissioned to determine whether changing the lighting conditions in the factory would increase employee productivity and initial findings appeared to support the idea. However, researchers found that changing the lighting conditions to lower lighting also resulted in improved productivity. Further research found that any change in workplace conditions increased productivity because employees felt valued and believed that management was paying attention to them and their working conditions. Employees cherished the idea of being empowered and having an input in the operations of the company which contributed to the rise in productivity. 24 Feb 2021 Read more
