Gene for autism
Another possible candidate gene for autism has been identified. Dan Arking at Johns Hopkins University and colleagues studied the DNA of 1295 autistic children and their parents. They found a common varient of the gene CNTNAP2. This gene helps to coordinate interactions between cells in the nervous system and is often associated with autism.
The gene could be a good target for drugs because it is active through life, rather than only during development.
