International film festival to honour SA filmmaker

The PBIFF begins on 19 April and runs through to 26 April, with a full day of South African films showcasing on 23 April.

All four of the films featured are Singh’s productions, including the first South African film to be nominated for an Academy Award (Yesterday, in the category of Best foreign language film), as well as the highest grossing South African film of all time - Mr Bones.

The event is part of the World Showcase of Films, which will feature premieres of independent films from two new countries each year, with this year's focus on South Africa and Israel.

The 2007 World Showcase of Film line-up will be screening Yesterday, Mr Bones, Red Dust and Dollars and White Pipes at Sunrise Cinemas in Mizner Park.

The day-long South African event, sponsored by SA private game reserve Kwandwe, will feature special discussions with Singh, prior to the South African-themed party at LaCigale in Delray Beach.

According to Angus Sholto-Douglas, manager of Kwandwe, "South Africa provides a perfect setting for filmmakers to make their wildest ideas come to life."

"In choosing a country's films to recognise, South Africa was one of the first that came to mind," said Randi Emerman, executive director of the Palm Beach International Film Festival. "Because of the cultural impact these films have had on the world, its PBIFF's honour to bring this excellence to South Florida."

During the festival week, more than 125 films will be screened, including over 50 world premieres and over 35 Florida premieres among the chosen features, documentaries and shorts.
