Green Drop status awarded to Sun City
This is the first private institution in the tourism and hospitality sector in South Africa to be awarded Green Drop status. The Green Drop award certifies that the resort has been evaluated on its compliance with waste-water legislation and management, and meets the highest performance standards for waste-water quality management.
"Achieving Green Drop status is testament to our keen and committed focus on running our business in an environmentally responsible way to minimise the effects of our operations on our surroundings. We are really proud of this achievement and remain committed to ongoing excellence and improvements," says Derek Turner, infrastructure manager at the Sun City Complex.
Support of employees
"Sun City is focused on maintaining Green Drop status, which is the highest level of certification awarded by the Department of Water Affairs in recognition of excellence in waste-water management processes. We would like to thank all the teams that worked with us to achieve this certification, and our employees for their support of our ongoing 'green' efforts to conserve water, save electricity, reduce pollution, and protect the environment," says Turner.
The Department of Water Affairs' Blue/Green Drop certification programmes aim to improve water quality provided by water and local authorities in South Africa. Water and local authority water providers and services are awarded with Blue and/or Green Drop status if they comply with drinking water and waste-water legislation and the management thereof. This incentive-driven regulatory approach is a first in South Africa, and is internationally regarded as unique in the water regulatory domain.
The Blue Drop and Green Drop awards confirm that the qualifying towns' drinking water quality and waste-water treatment are being managed according to excellent world-class standards. Blue Drop status indicates that drinking water supplied is of excellent quality and safe for human consumption. The Green Drop incentive-based regulation system grants special acknowledgement for exceptional waste-water management.
