[BizCareers] Is entrepreneurial flair good or bad? How does my salary compare?
The BizCareers column returns once again and tackles the question of "Where do you see yourself in 10 years?" as well as the issue of salaries for specific job titles.
Please can you assist me?
I recently went to an interview and the question was: "Where do you see yourself in 10 years?"
I answered with "I would like to be running my own business". I didn't get the job as the feedback was that they were concerned I was going to leave to start up my own business. I said this because eventually it's something I would like to do, but I will always be a loyal and hard working employee and 10 years is a long way away.
Should I have answered differently? I was just being honest.
Thanks for your help - Gordon
Hi Gordon,
Thanks for your question.
There definitely isn't a black and white answer here. Each company will have a different set of qualities they're looking for, for different roles that they have within the company.
For example, an entrepreneurial flair is a great quality to have for someone that has to run and manage their own sales desk such as an estate agent. However, it's probably not the best quality to have for a bookkeeper who will be groomed and trained to eventually become a financial manager. If the role you're being interviewed for does not require an entrepreneurial spirit then perhaps it wasn't the right role for you anyway? There are many companies and roles out there that would value such a quality.
I wish you all the best in your job hunt and hope that answers your question.
I'm confused as to which salary bracket I fit into?
I'm currently an e-commerce specialist. Can you help with this at all?
Thanks - Helen
Hi Helen,
Companies vary in their choice of salary brackets, to give you a guideline take a look at the ITweb salary survey taken in 2014, it is a very useful tool that allows you to compare salaries for specific job titles.
Always love what you do!
Juliette
