Everything about Tzaneen is 'green'
The municipality, in Limpopo's lowveld region, was recently awarded the Greenest Municipality award for the third consecutive year.
The municipality beat another 111 metropolitan and local municipalities to the top prize.
Proud mayor Dikeledi Mmetle said she was "very proud of her municipality.
"We are obviously very excited and proud of the hard work we've put in," she said.
The award comes with a R3,5m prize, which is to be used in projects that promote environment related projects and green economy initiatives.
Sarah Chauke, from Dan village, said the municipality deserved the award because residents always kept their villages clean.
Greater Tzaneen was followed by the Newcastle and Drakenstein local municipalities.
Ekurhuleni came out tops in the Metropolitan Category, with eThekwini and the City of Cape Town taking second and third spots.
