CCMA facilitation process in Amplats retrenchments postponed

The Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) has postponed the planned facilitation process between itself, Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) and the respective unions around possible retrenchments.

The facilitation process has been postponed for 60 days by agreement between the consulting parties to enable them to engage with the Department of Mineral Resources with a view to finding appropriate solutions.

Amplats earlier this month announced that it would be retrenching about 14,000 workers due to the strikes that resulted in the company not generating profits. However, it then put this on hold for at least two months after the company, government and organised labour had reached an agreement to postpone the retrenchments.

The CCMA had been requested by Amplats to facilitate discussions regarding the retrenchments in line with section 189A of the Labour Relations Act.

"The CCMA remains available to assist the parties to find the best possible outcome," said CCMA Director, Nerine Kahn.
