Cosatu calls off strike, NUM goes ahead
The Congress of South African Trade Unions has called off its planned strike action against the use of labour brokers in South Africa but the National Union of Mineworkers is to press ahead with its strike action, demanding safer working conditions in mines.
Business Day report that thousands of mine, construction and energy workers are expected to down tools as part of the strike action to remember "those who died in the line of duty", on Wednesday, 5 October 2011.
It quotes NUM spokesman Lesiba Seshoka as saying that about 400 000 workers are expected to down tools for the day. The Chamber of Mines has confirmed that it will join the strike as part of its effort to spread national awareness about health and safety in the workplace.
